Industrial Waste EMERGENCY CLEANUP
Spill Cleanup & Lagoon Cleanout – Charlotte, NC Food Processing Facility
Rapid foam spill cleanup and lagoon restoration completed in 4–5 days to return facility to safe, compliant operations
Project Overview
A food and beverage processing facility in Charlotte, NC experienced a system upset that caused excessive foam overflow from a processing tank. The material spread across the site and entered the stormwater pond, creating an immediate environmental and operational issue.
The facility required rapid cleanup, sludge removal, and restoration of the stormwater system to its permitted condition to resume normal operations.
Project Snapshot
Emergency response mobilized immediately
Full site and pond cleanup completed in 4–5 days
~1,000 units of non-hazardous material removed
Stormwater pond restored to original permitted condition
| Detail | Specification |
|---|---|
| Location | Charlotte, North Carolina |
| Client Type | Food & Beverage Processing Facility |
| Material | Non-hazardous food processing waste / sludge |
| Volume | ~1000 (estimated) |
| Problem | Outdoor storage caused solidification into unusable brick |
| Challenge | Foam overflow and contamination of site and stormwater pond |
| Our Solution | Emergency cleanup, lagoon cleanout, waste removal and disposal |
| Equipment | Vac trucks, frac tanks, dump trucks |
| Timeline | 4–5 days |
The Challenge:
Foam Overflow Contaminated Site and Stormwater System
The facility experienced a process upset that caused foam buildup inside a tank. The foam exceeded containment capacity and discharged across the site, ultimately entering the stormwater pond.
This created multiple issues:
- Loss of control over process waste
- Contamination of the stormwater system
- Immediate environmental exposure risk
- Disruption to normal plant operations
The facility needed a contractor capable of quickly stabilizing the situation, removing waste, and restoring the pond to its permitted condition.
Our Approach:
Rapid Response Cleanup and Full Sludge Removal
Step 1: Site Assessment
US Waste Industries mobilized to the site and assessed the extent of contamination across both the facility and stormwater pond. This allowed for immediate planning of containment and removal strategy.
Step 2: Execution and Waste Removal
Crews deployed vacuum trucks, frac tanks, and dump trucks to remove sludge and contaminated material from the site and lagoon. All affected areas were cleaned to eliminate residual waste.
Step 3: Disposal and Restoration
All collected material was transported offsite to a permitted disposal facility. The stormwater pond was cleaned and restored to its original permitted condition, allowing the facility to return to normal operations.
Results:
Site Restored and Operations Resumed
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Timeline | 4-5 days |
| Volume Removed | ~1000 (non-hazardous material) |
| Waste Handling | Fully removed and disposed at permitted facility |
Project Impact
Site returned to safe working condition
Stormwater pond restored to compliant state
Environmental risk mitigated
Facility able to resume normal operations without extended downtime

Technical Execution Details
- Vacuum truck deployment for sludge and liquid removal
- Frac tank staging to manage waste volumes onsite
- Dump truck hauling for solid and semi-solid material
- Full removal of lagoon sludge to restore pond capacity
- Coordinated transport and disposal at permitted facilities
The approach prioritized speed, containment, and complete removal to eliminate ongoing environmental risk.
Strategic Insight
Rapid mobilization combined with high-volume vacuum and hauling capacity allowed for full removal of both surface contamination and lagoon sludge in a compressed timeframe.
Addressing both the visible spill and the impacted stormwater system simultaneously prevented recurring contamination and ensured the facility met environmental expectations before restarting operations.
